This years back - to - front weather which gave us very dry conditions in March and April and now all the showers has meant slightly lower yields and delays in getting the crop in. The quality is still there for those that are patient and can avoid the rain. Here at Hayters with many years experience we have not rushed first cut and have so far avoided the rain and have made some very good quality haylage and, coupled together with some extra land this year, means we should have good stocks for the winter.
We now hope for some sustained good weather to enable us to finish the haylage and get the hay done before we start straw!

Mowing and turning has begun in earnest for this years hay and haylage crop. You may be thinking that you have seen quite alot of grass already cut. This probably has been made into silage or haylage for race/performance horses. Be aware if you are buying haylage from someone who has made it already if you only use your horse for recreation as this haylage is likely to be high in protein and send your horse "off its head".
